Hmm, this would be my very last post here, as the saying goes, time waits for no one. Well, I'm not "no one", so time just passes fast for me. However, I'll be continuing to update on my LJ (Livejournal, what were you thinking?) still. I'll say, that during the beginning of this module, I didn't expect to learn anything from this subject, but true enough, it was an easy journey to go through.

Well, along the journey to the end of the module. Frankly speaking, I've not learn much of a thing, perhaps mainly because I've been exposed already to the search facilities and sharing sites such as wiki, that are introduced in the module, even before I took up this subject. But I'll have to say, I was quite surprised by the way BOOLEAN operators were used. Such as the example of searching for coffee bean and not tea. Numerous operators were used, and it appeared to be so complicated, when you are just searching for two words. That really left me wondering, is it really that hard to just search for "coffee bean" and look through the results for a while.

Anyway, not really a subject for those who are always wanting to discover new things, but highly advisable for those wanting to score Ace grades easily. That's all I feel about this subject. No hard feelings teacher, just honest feedback from a student. Bye, all.

Hmm. I guess many of you have heard of the website, www.talkingcock.com. Well, this website is basically a Singapore humour site, discussing issues of Singapore in many different aspects, all they all serve to entertain readers. It has been debated in the parliament of Singapore before, due to the content that the website has. Basically, it trys to create humour using Singapore's happenings, such as the escape of Jemaah Islamiyah Singapore network leader, Mas Selamat. They created a game on that issue, on the basis of Pacman, which they name it as Pac Mat, keep "pac" from the original name and "mat" from Mas Selamat.

Hmm, we were asked to explore this website in depth, and try to evaluate this site. For me, I think that the website is appropriately designed, with a disclaimer/agreement with the user that the content is purely satirical and humorous. Which means that it was created solely to entertain. As for the overall outlook of the website, they categorize content into relevant groups, with articles under a category, and jokes under another. The outlook was quite organized, although it appears to be a little wordy when you enter the site.

Well, we had to choose a role from being

· Singapore’s Prime Minister
· A Singaporean
· A Foreigner working / studying in Singapore

and we have to give the appropriate reactions for the roles we chose.

Hmm, interesting, well, being a Singaporean, I'll take up the simplest role of being an average Singaporean, and I must say, as not all Singaporeans are pleased with the government's way of handling issues, this site would serve as amusement/entertainment for them. Also, this website provides a forums, which I've went into for further venture. I must say, the forum is quite active, with Singaporeans discussing not only jokes available on the site, but also, formal issues such as the new ERP gantries being implemented.

Alright, that ends my venture for www.talkingcock.com, got more things to update on.

Hmm, we were given feedback for our wiki pages. Most of the feedbacks were our wiki pages were not as lengthy as compared to other classes. But there's a point I must address, is quantity something to take into measure, when quality is already there? Well, I suppose I'll leave it for you all to decide. We were supposed to give a summary and evaluation of the resource, somehow, summary turns into a detailed description/explanation, which oversees the purpose of summarising.

Anyway, as I'm doing on the topic, to discuss on the impact of terrorism on world economy, my resource happened to be an article that is explaining on my topic. So, someone please teach me how to elaborate mathematical equations which I strongly believe is higher than A Levels Mathematics in words? Your help is greatly appreciated. Oh yes, in my own words too.

Alright, I gotta go try deciphering the mathematical formulae now. Wish me luck! Till then!

Hmm, it's been a while since I updated. Anyway, there were no lessons for UIR this week due to e-learning activities. Yeah, something worth being happy about, since every UIR lesson for me is quite boring. No offence for the previous statement, just that there wasn't much things to learn from.

Well, I'm suppose to share about my terrorism topic on this Wiki Wetpaint thing. And I must say, the Wiki is very inconvenient, because it couldn't retain the format I was using while I typed my discussion summary in Microsoft Word 2007.

So, what did I learn? Basically, the only thing I learnt for this week was how to use the Wiki Wetpaint, which isn't very user-friendly. It doesn't teach how to remove pages/threads you accidentally add in. Oh well, forgot about that, I just update my group's Wiki page. We're suppose to provide a summary on one resource we evaluated during the previous practical session. Hmm, well mine was an article, so it was quite tedious trying to read up 40 pages, which I didn't, because I don't have that much of an attention span. So I merely summarized the first few pages, which is sufficient to know about what the rest of the article is gonna blabber about. Why? Because the first page is an abstract, and if you do not know what an 'abstract' means, go check up on the dictionary.

Well, that concludes my reflection for this week's e-learning activities. Till then, folks.

Hmm, I'm supposed to post an entry about my dream holiday. Well, if it's a dream holiday for me, it's definitely got to be Vienna, Austria. Why you may ask? Why not Switzerland, Japan, Australia and some other European countries? Well, there's something that Vienna has, and these other random countries do not. It's music!

Vienna, other than music as it's main attraction, they also have wonderful sceneries!
Here are some pictures of sights in Vienna,

Well, these scenes/sights are definitely not something you can see locally, or in most of those bustling cities of some other countries.

I mentioned music earlier on, and that was the reason I chose Vienna to be my dream holiday. Personally, I adore classical music, especially pieces of them played on violins or pianos. Somehow, it helps me when I'm mugging for tests, or when I'm feeling vexed over a project. Classical music really soothes my soul, and hence, Vienna can expose me more to the wonderful arts of music. Yes!

Oh well, I'm supposed to evaluate the source where I got these beautiful pictures. I got them from http://www.aboutvienna.org/, which the url already clearly stated, the purpose of the website is to let the public know more about Vienna. It has quite a wide coverage of Vienna, considering the fact that they included information on the sights, and culture wise too. Also there are various guides that helps reader on traveling in there. Anyway, I won't be touching on all the criterias for evaluation, since it would be much of a hassle, so it'll be a brief one. So, next up is accessibility of the website. I must say, I'm pretty satisfied with this website's accessibility. It doesn't require any registrations or logins and it's free. That saves me the fuss of having to type in my particulars and such. (Yes I hate troublesome stuffs.)

Oh well, That concludes my dream holiday summary, but not my entry. Hehe.

Coming up next, evaluation of one of the resource I got from my previous sessions of UIR, practica 4 & 5. So, the resource will be www.emergency.com/cntrterr.htm. It is an online compilation of terrorism-related stuffs, including articles and some other external links.

Well, I'll evaluate on the overall quality of the website. It's layout is quite of a mess, and it appears to be too plain and not attention catching enough. However, some of the external links included are really quite informative and useful. Navigation is also quite easy, and it is void of registrations and logins! Coverage is vast as well, from articles to external links. All in all, quite a useful website if you need information on issues with regards to terrorism.

Oh well, I'm tired now, so I'll stop here. Till then, everyone.

A little random, but I guess many had seen the cartoon characters on my blog skin before, but does anyone know what they're called? (: Well, these pair of cute little couple has names, Pon and Zi! Pon and Zi is an artwork drawn by an artist, Jeff Thomas, usually known as his online nickname Azuzephre. Browse through that website's gallery, and learn of how cute and meaningful the pictures can get!
Here's one of the artworks they have,

P.S. the spider is a black widow and Pon (boyfriend) is the yellow one, with Zi (girlfriend) is the blue one, so go find out what happens when a black widow bites you. I'll tell you what happens if you don't know at the end of this post.

Alright back to topic, recent UIR session had been a fruitful one. We had to go through a lab exercise pertaining to search engines, meta search engines, and subject directory search engine.

Learnt about how BOOLEAN Operators like AND & OR can be applied to search engines in order to lessen the number of search results returned, and reduce the amount of unnecessary crap that will appear on the search results list. So, we were told to try out the different search engines, searching with keywords from our topics. So, for my case, it was terrorism, world, and economy.

Search engines, the usual ones, returned me a list of 2,160,000 results, from Google.com, whereas meta search engine, MetaCrawler, returned me significantly lesser results, a total of 76.
On the contrary, subject directory search engines, which I used Yahoo for mine, returned me a list of 723 results. Each has their own advantages I suppose.

Well, a difference between these 3 search engines would be the number of results returned. Significantly, the usual search engines return the most results, whereas the other 2 returns a greatly shortened list of results. Another would be the relevance of the results, subject directory and meta searches return results with more relevance to the keywords entered in than usual search engines does.

Pertaining to search capabilities, the usual search engines often return results that are irrelevant, hence being one of its weakness, and the subject directory on the contrary gives very relevant results. Meta search engines reduces the number of results returned and provides users with the ease of browsing, without having to look through the whole list of results returned from usual search engines.

Out of these 3, which one suits you best? Well, personally I feel that I'm more accustomed to the usual search engines, despite its flaws, it still provides me with information I need, and sometimes, you may get some results you didn't expect to even see of.

Well so that marks the end of my current entry. Till then!

P.S. A black widow's bite is fatal, if you do not know what fatal means, go check it up on dictionary.com

Pon & Zi...

Well, I'm supposed to post an entry about something real interesting, "If I have $500" for a shopping spree.

To start off with, if I had that amount, I'll first click away at ebay.sg.

Found the first product I'll love to own, a Nintendo DS Lite in Enamel Blue.

Have a look,

Spotted in ebay.

Ok, that's a sweet little gaming console to add on to my Playstation Portable which I currently have, now I can play both Nintendo and Playstation Portable supported games! Well, that sweet little thing is going for $225.00, since its brand new, judging from the description given by the seller.

So.. how much do I have left? Let's do a simple calculation, $500 - 225 = $275!

After a few more clickings and searching, I found my next desired device. (Yes, I'm a device freak).

Guess what? I found this nice little external hard disk going for $165.00!

It holds up to 250GB of files, just what I need to store all my media and other documents.

Here, have a peek at it, not very stylish I'll say, but practical enough!

Spotted in ebay too.

Well, as I've said, it really isn't very splendid-looking, but oh well, as long as I like it. It's MY $500. *Laughs out loud*

Ok, I'm left with $110 ($275 - $165 ) now.

Maybe I can try to get a few apparel items?

Let's see..

How bout a decent looking authentic Ralph Lauren "5" Series (or Big Pony like what some people named it as) polo shirt in cool black & white?

Spotted in ebay again.

This shirt is going for $65.50. According to the seller, it's currently still in top condition, certainly more worthwhile than buying it from the boutique in Takashimaya. With that, I'm left with $44.50.

And.. the last item I'll throw my money for is, a memory stick, namely a Sandisk 4GB 4G M2 Memory Stick Micro MS Pro Duo +2AR7.

Definitely a good buy, such low price with 2 adapter readers! (Only for $40!)

With this, I'll have no worries about my mobile phone's memory stick being not able to satisfy my huge thirst of music. More music! So.. I'm left with $4.50 ($44.50 - $40) now. Perhaps a meal somewhere?

Well, that concludes my shopping spree, if only I really had the $500. Anybody wants to donate? (Just kidding.)

Ok, till then everyone!

Stay tuned for my TERRORISM related posts! Cheers everyone!

Pon & Zi...

So basically, as the title of this post says, I'm going to talk about what I've come across after the completion of my UIR Practical 1 & 2.
No doubt, the Internet is a very powerful tool for research, but yes, from what I've learnt, it's also a powerful tool for commiting crimes. Well, you see, the topic I chose for my portfolio is, to discuss the impact of terrorism on the world economy. A little pertaining to crimes, but unfortunately, not to the Internet directly.

Alright, so I'll say, upon finishing both practicals, I've learnt quite a bit about the resources available on the Internet, ranging from discussion forums to electronic journals. Well, I'm going to share a piece of informative article with you people that is on the topic of my research itself.
Before reading, I'll say, not for those who hate lengthy stuffs.

Here's the url of it,
http://ksghome.harvard.edu/~aabadie/twe.pdf

This article basically inform the readers of how terrorism affects the world economy, and I'll say its not very outdated on the current situation, since it was done up during August 2007, which is only a few months back. It provides a detailed explanation of why, people argued that terrorism does not have a great impact on the world economy, one reason being, terrorist attacks only destory a small fraction of the stock of capital of a country. A simple model (as stated, but it doesn't look any simple to me, in fact, I don't understand a bit of it) is also included in the article, using mathematical equations to show how greatly terrorism affects the world economy.

Well, thats as far as my attention span could get me to, for the rest of the article, feel free to explore it on your own if you guys (and girls) want to. I just couldn't concentrate anymore upon seeing those funny equations where it seemed Greek to me. Yeah.

Well stay tuned to my blog, I'll be updating more on terrorism! Cheers.
